Presidential candidate Doug Burgum, the Republican governor of North Dakota announced he was suspending his campaign. Burgum’s campaign focused on “moving America 180 degrees in the opposite direction of Joe Biden on three critical issues, the economy, energy, and national security.”
He appeared in the first two Republican debates but failed to meet the polling threshold for the third or fourth, something he criticized the Republican National Committee for, saying that their job should not have been to “reduce competition and restrict fresh ideas.”
Burgum was a long shot from the start of the race. He largely financed his own campaign, putting in $12.2 million of the $15.1 million his campaign raised from March to September, something he was able to do as a billionaire and one of the richest governors in the country. He nearly missed the first debate because he ruptured his Achilles tendon the day before, but he debated standing on one leg and took to campaigning with a knee scooter.
He is far from the first Republican to drop out: Mike Pence, Tim Scott, Larry Elder, Perry Johnson, Will Hurd, Francis Suarez have already suspended their campaigns as Donald Trump continues to lead the field.
